Dr. Chanda 

Dr. Chanda Corbett

Chanda C. Corbett, Ph.D. is a native of Philadelphia, PA.  She graduated with honors from Lincoln University’s Honors Program with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, a Master's of Education degree in Human Services from Lehigh University, and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Temple University. Immediately after completing her Ph.D., Dr. Corbett accepted a position as a Resident Director and the Religious Activities Coordinator with the Semester at Sea Program sponsored by the Institute for Shipboard Education and the University of Pittsburgh which provided her the privilege to travel around the world by ship in 1998 to nine countries (Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Malaysia, Israel, Italy, Turkey, and Morocco).

Dr. Chanda is currently the Psychologist of the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center's Community Living Center (nursing home) where she provides counseling to acute care, rehabilitation, and long-term care residents and their families; supervises psychologists in training; and serves as the Mental Health Service Diversity Committee Chair and regional VISN 5 Geriatric Mental Health Champion. 

Dr. Chanda has provided individual, couples, and family counseling, psychotherapy, and training services incorporating the values of her clients in private practices in Durham, NH, and Towson,  Ellicott City, and Catonsville MD; and counseling services at universities in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, New Hampshire, and Maryland, and nursing homes and assisted living facilities throughout Maryland and in Washington, DC. In addition, Dr. Corbett has consulted to various organizations and served as an adjunct faculty member of undergraduate and graduate programs at Morgan State University, Loyola University, the University of New Hampshire, and Temple University. She is also the former Board member of Women in Maryland Higher Education, and served in leadership roles for the American Psychological Association’s Society of Counseling Psychology Awards and Recognition and Community Engagement Committees and the American College Personnel Association’s Commission for the Counseling and Psychological Services Directorate and Credentialing Implementation Team.

Dr. Chanda has completed a number of leadership programs and the recipient of many honors and awards. Most recently, she is a 2022 Supervisor Ready Leadership Program graduate and a 2022 VISN 5 Coin of Excellence Award for her Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion contributions. Additionally, she is the 2020 Carl S. Barham Lifetime Achievement Award of the Maryland Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development.

More About Me...

Dr. Chanda is a women of faith and enjoys giving back to the community through service.  She has volunteered in music, children, youth, women, and prayer groups in faith-based institutions and other non-profit organizations working in community mediation and workforce development. She currently serves as a Stephen Ministry/ Bridgeway Community Church Caregiver supervisor and instructor, and leads the Mental Health and Faith Network she founded in 2018 at Bridgeway Community Church, MD. She finds enjoyment in outreaching to the community with mental wellness resources and was awarded a 2020 Horizon Foundation Community Engagement Grant to provide faith-based mental health interventions. She has served as the project manager for Mental Health and Faith several conferences. In 2018, over 28 concurrent conference sessions were offered and in 2019 over 20 concurrent sessions were offered. During the 2019 COVID-19 pandemic, she has facilitated Mental Health First Aid trainings, and hosted virtual Mental Health hours, a virtual mental health and faith conference, and several mental health psycho-educational series. Additionally, local and national faith-based communities and professional organizations have consulted with her via virtual and in-person platforms and hosted her for workshops and retreats.

Though working and serving are important to Dr. Chanda, fun and relaxation is an ongoing work-life dance she does to prioritize for her mental health. In Dr. Chanda’s spare time, she enjoys national and international travel. She loves learning about and from other cultures within their communities and is looking forward accomplishing her goal of visiting the seven continents of the world when she visits Antarctica. She is thankful for the mentors she has connected with throughout her life and enjoys time spent with her mentors and mentees. Additionally, making time to just grab coffee, see a movie, or celebrate an accomplishment with family and friends are opportunities she looks forward to. Exercise through walking, being in nature, and golf are regular activities engaged in to clear the mind and strengthen the body. Photography, panting, and making jewelry are some of the forms of artistic expression enjoyed to create more beauty in her life.  Dr. Chanda encourages us all to prioritize caring for ourselves and often speaks on this topic.
